Busy week? Listen to the 20-minute audio of this report.
As a church leader, you live in constant tension. We call it the “Shepherd-CEO” conflict. You want to focus on shepherding people by leading them to Jesus and caring for your community, but the “CEO” realities of running a small business keep getting in the way. You deal with compliance, budgets, and technology that keeps stealing time from your true calling.
We feel God calling us to help you with the technology side of things, so we recently spent over 15 hours auditing 100 Australian church websites from local Baptist fellowships to large Pentecostal hubs. We weren’t looking for “cool designs” or the latest trends. We were looking for ministry effectiveness.
The most shocking finding? Out of 100 churches, not a single one had a “perfect” website.
While the heart of the Australian church is healthy and missional, our digital platforms don’t always reflect that. For many, their “digital door” is stuck:
If the physical doors to your church were locked during a service, you’d fix it immediately. This report isn’t about guilt — it’s about unlocking your digital door so your website can become a 24/7 ministry tool that can help the people God is sending your way.
Audit at a Glance: The State of the “Digital Front Door”
To measure these 100 websites, we used a diagnostic tool we created called The BRANCH Blueprint. Inspired by John 15:1-17, this 6-point framework is designed to help you look past the “pretty coat of paint” and measure the actual structural health of your digital presence through evaluating your site’s Barriers, Responsiveness, Analytics, Navigation, Content, and Health.
Before we dive into the details, here is the high-level summary of how the 100 audited church websites performed across the BRANCH categories.
| Category | The Reality | The Missional Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Barriers | 55% had issues with their technical foundation | When your site isn’t configured properly, you can make it harder for visitors to access your site, which can break their trust before they even step foot in your church building. |
| Responsiveness | 93% didn’t meet modern mobile standards | When people can’t use your site properly on their phone, you can block people from learning about Jesus (because most people use their phones rather than desktop computers to surf the internet). |
| Analytics | 70% had no tracking or analytics installed | When you don’t have analytics set up, you don’t know what’s working or not working, so you don’t know whether you’re stewarding your church’s time and money in the best way possible. |
| Navigation | 9% had confusing menus | When people can’t use your menu easily to find the info they need, they’ll most likely just leave your site, which is a missed opportunity to deepen their relationship with God. |
| Content | 91% had content that wasn’t optimised for users or search engines like Google | When your content isn’t updated or set up properly in the back end of the website, it can be difficult for users to find updated info and for Google to show relevant pages to users when they search for relevant terms. |
| Health | 33% weren’t regularly maintained | When your site isn’t regularly maintained, you can confuse people because they’re not sure whether info is current or whether you’re still operating or not. |

B is for Barriers: Unlocking the Digital Front Door
A “barrier” is anything that stops a visitor from even entering your site. It’s the digital equivalent of leaving the church doors locked on a Sunday morning.
The Stats: 55% of church websites had issues with their technical foundation
While most churches had the basics in place, over half failed our foundational configuration tests. These aren’t just “tech glitches” — they’re digital obstacles that act as a “closed” sign to your community. Whether it’s a security warning or a website that simply doesn’t load, these barriers stop ministry before it can even begin.
The Mission Risk: Breaking trust before you meet
Security and stability aren’t just technical checkboxes — they’re relational. If a first-time visitor sees a “not secure” warning or a “site can’t be reached” error, they naturally hesitate. If a person doesn’t feel safe on your website, they’re unlikely to trust you with their prayer requests, their family, or their personal details. A broken digital door signals a lack of care, even when we know the opposite is true of your heart.
The Stewardship Solution: Securing the entry
True stewardship means making sure that your “digital front door” is as welcoming and secure as your physical one. As a Digital Ministry Partner, I look deep into server settings and redirections to make sure your foundation is rock solid. For your church, the goal is simple: make sure that every version of your website address leads safely and directly to your message of hope.

R is for Responsiveness: Loving Your Neighbour Through Accessibility
When we talk about “responsiveness”, most people think it just means “does the site fit on a phone screen?”. While that’s part of it, true responsiveness is much broader. It asks how your website responds to the actual needs of the human being using it.
The Stats: 93% of church websites didn’t meet modern mobile standards
Our audit revealed a surprising paradox: while 90% of Australian church websites “look” good on a mobile device at first glance, a staggering 93% failed our deeper responsiveness health check. The most common culprit was “invisible” technical weight. We found that 91% of churches are still using old, heavy image formats like PNG and JPG instead of modern, efficient WebP files. Even if a site looks okay, these heavy files slow down load speeds and eat into the mobile data of your visitors.
The Mission Risk: The invisible stumbling block
We’d never build a new physical church building without a wheelchair ramp or clear signage. In the digital world, accessibility is just as important. A slow-loading, data-heavy site is a digital stumbling block for a mum trying to find your kids’ program while wrestling a toddler into the car, or a seeker in a rural area with a poor connection. If we make people wait or waste their mobile data just to see our service times, we aren’t practicing good digital hospitality.
The Stewardship Solution: Removing the friction
True responsiveness is the digital equivalent of “loving our neighbour”. It’s about removing every technical friction point so that the Gospel is the only thing your visitors have to consider. As a Digital Ministry Partner, I look past the “look” of the site to make sure the back-end images are optimised and the load speeds are fast so your site is accessible to everyone, regardless of their device or data plan.
Check your church: Is your mobile site fast enough? Use the Responsiveness section on pages 5 and 6 of The BRANCH Website Health Check to test your site’s mobile health and see if your images are acting as a stumbling block.
A is for Analytics: Stewarding Your Digital Foyer
If you’re a pastor or church leader, you almost certainly count the attendance on a Sunday morning (or have a volunteer do it for you). You don’t do this because you’re obsessed with numbers — you do it because you care about people and want to know if your ministry is growing. Yet, when it comes to the “digital foyer”, the story is very different.
The Stats: 70% of church websites had no tracking or analytics installed
Our audit discovered that a staggering 70% of Australian church websites are currently “flying blind”. They have no tracking or analytics installed whatsoever, which means most churches have no idea who’s visiting their site, where they’re coming from, or what they’re looking for. It’s the digital equivalent of holding a church service in a dark room — you can preach the message, but you have no way of knowing if anyone is actually in the room listening.
The Mission Risk: Guessing instead of stewarding
This isn’t about “big data” or treating people like statistics — it’s about stewardship. As a leader, you want to make sure you aren’t wasting church resources. Without analytics, you’re simply guessing. You don’t know if your “Plan a Visit” page is actually working or if visitors are getting stuck and leaving before they find your contact details. Without this data, you can’t know if your digital outreach is being effective or if you’re missing opportunities to connect with seekers in your area.
The Stewardship Solution: Measuring what matters
By measuring what’s happening in your digital foyer, you’re being a good steward of the tools God has given us to reach our community. As a Digital Ministry Partner, I help churches set up privacy-focused, professional analytics so you can see the fruit of your digital ministry. The goal is to answer mission-critical questions. Are people finding the sermon recordings? Is the new event page helpful? Having this data allows you to lead with clarity and confidence.
Check your church: Are you flying blind? Use the Analytics section on page 7 of The BRANCH Website Health Check to see if your site is currently set up to measure your digital reach.
C is for Content: Showing the Stranger a Warm Welcome
It’s easy to treat a church website like a digital newsletter for the people already inside the building. But in reality, your website is your main way of showing hospitality to the stranger at your gate. It’s the digital foyer where a guest decides if they’re welcome before they ever hear a sermon.
The Stats: 91% of church websites had content not optimised for users or search engines like Google
While our audit found that Australian churches are doing an incredible job at keeping their language accessible and jargon-free, 91% of websites are still struggling with how that content is structured and maintained. Whether it’s “hidden” structural settings that help Google find your pages or simply keeping event information current, most sites are currently missing opportunities to connect with their community.
The Mission Risk: The “Ghost Town” signal
An outdated website unintentionally tells a visitor “we don’t care enough to update this”, which we know isn’t true — it’s more like “we don’t have enough time or tech expertise to update this”. An outdated website also signals a “ghost town” where the church might no longer be active. Even if your text is welcoming, poor technical structure makes it difficult for Google to show your pages to people in your community searching for hope. If the back end of your site is messy or the information is months old, your message of hope stays hidden from those who need it most.
The Stewardship Solution: Freshness and visibility
Fresh content says “we’re alive, active, and expecting you”. True stewardship involves making sure your message is both current and technically “readable” for search engines. As a Digital Ministry Partner, I help make sure your content is structured correctly so that Google can find you and so that newcomers feel valued. We want to remove the technical confusion so your message is the only thing a visitor has to focus on.
Check your church: Is your content working for you or against you? Use the Content section on pages 10 to 12 of The BRANCH Website Health Check to audit your text and your technical structure today.
H is for HEALTH: Building a Sustainable Digital Future
Digital health isn’t a “one-and-done” project. Just as a church building requires regular maintenance to prevent the roof from leaking, your website requires active oversight to make sure it remains a reliable ministry tool.
The Stats: 33% of church websites weren’t regularly maintained
Our audit found that one in three Australian church websites showed signs of digital neglect. Whether it was broken links that lead nowhere or copyright dates that haven’t been updated in years, 33% of churches had at least one significant “health” issue. These small points of friction might seem minor, but they accumulate and slowly make the site less reliable for the community you serve.
The Mission Risk: The signal of neglect
When a visitor encounters a broken link or a “2021” copyright date at the bottom of your site, it sends a subtle but powerful signal: Is anyone still here? Confusion is a massive barrier to connection. If a seeker isn’t sure whether your information is current, they’re less likely to risk showing up on a Sunday morning. A lack of digital maintenance can unintentionally signal a lack of active ministry, even if your church is thriving in person.
The Stewardship Solution: Moving from Repair to Proactive Care
True stewardship means building systems that last. Many pastors face a “forgotten password crisis” because the one person who built the site has moved on, leaving the church with a digital asset they can no longer maintain. As a Digital Ministry Partner, I focus on creating sustainable digital futures. I help churches move from “emergency repairs” to proactive health so your site remains a healthy, fruit-bearing branch of your ministry for years to come.

If you’ve read this far and feel a sense of “digital weight,” let me remind you of our most important finding: out of 100 churches, not a single website was perfect.
You’re not alone in the struggle to balance the “CEO” requirements of technology with the “Shepherd” calling of ministry. The goal of The BRANCH Blueprint isn’t to add another item to your to-do list — it’s to help you prune away what isn’t working so your digital presence can bear more fruit.
